ICFO was the venue of the 2009 spring meeting of SAUUL (Science and Application of Ultrafast and Ultraintense Lasers) on May 14th and 15th. This research project forms part of the Consolider-Ingenio 2010 Program of the Spanish Ministry for Science and Innovation (MICINN) and aims at funding cutting-edge nationwide projects at the forefront of research in any area of science.
The project goal is to make progress in the development of ultrashort pulse lasers in Spain. The high concentration of energy achieved with these lasers opens up a broad range of new applications. Further project objectives are applications of this kind of technology in future devices.
Researcher groups involved are the local groups led by Prof. Jens Biegert and Prof. Majid Ebrahim-Zadeh at ICFO, as well as groups from the University of Salamanca, the University of Murcia, the Complutense University (Madrid), the University of the Basque Country, and the Jaume I University (Castelló).
